Saturday Morning Garden Blogging ~ Vol 14.07: the Season of Meh!

Usually February is the month most of us here on Long Island, NY, think of as the “worst” month.  Unpredictable, cold, likely the worst snow month.  Well… so far it’s been a fairly warmish February and I see signs of things growing, but not growing.  Around this time in February, it’s also the time when I first start to hear Spring songs from the wild birds.  And the past couple of days with temps being nearly 60, it’s felt like Spring.

But in fact, it’s the season of Meh.  Not Winter, Not Spring.  I guess I could call it the season of dreary days, but Meh serves well.

So bear with me as I cheat and pull some past photos of the season of my Joy- which is when there is colour and green and blooms all in the garden.  If I didn’t do this, all you all would see are dreary dim photos like this poor hellebore blooming with its flower drooping into the mulch.  The heavy snows we had here crushed most of my hellebore.  They’ll bloom, but likely I won’t get a nice display like years past.

Sad flower.  I actually thought it was some piece of paper that flew into the yard. Upon closer inspection, realized the hellebore was just starting to bloom — just in time for another possible snow storm this weekend!

Or if I really want to see something blooming IRL, I have to search in the side porch — and I found this:

Didn’t mean to save this one — but threw the plant still in it’s pot inside as cold temps descended last December.  Low and behold, it actually is blooming.

Yesterday was my New Year.  It’s the Year of the Dog! So here are some more celebratory photos

Red passion fireworks display!  Gung Hay Fat Choy!

Lanterns are lit! (hardy hibiscus)

Moonflower (not Moon Cakes, sorry, I never could abide eating a moon cake)

Prosperity (gold coins) and Good food (shrimp!)

Dumplings for all! (well, okay — Shastas really aren’t dumpling like, but certainly enough for all!)

Strength and Luck in the New Year (this photo was actually taken on Feb 16, 2018 — it was that warm that they came up fro the bottom of the pond where they usually hang out in winter.  Since they saw me walking around, they were milling about hoping to be fed.)

Peace

Okay — KoKo finds this diary exhausting….zzzzz

So please — if you have them, share photos to cheer up us in the cold climates.  Really — this is the time of year when all of us are drooling over catalogs and dreaming of warmer temps and growing things. And plus for me, I think there may be snow on the ground when I wake up on Sunday
