The war on weeds begins, but amidst the overgrowth that I’m slowly moving forward on clearing and thinning, the clematis have been quietly blooming. Over the years, I’ve planted vines tucked here and there. Some planned well, others stuffed in the ground in haste because they’d been left in the pot too long and the growing season was not slowing down. So as I weed, coming across the blooms still surprise me.
This one looks a bit battle-worn. Not sure what critter snipped off the fat buds, leaving only one to bloom this year - likely by one of the baby squirrels running crazily around the yard this spring. To correct the damage, simply take a profile photo!
the only one I recall the name: Clematis JosephineClematis have flowers of all sizes, shapes and colours — so, some portraits of those that have been blooming over the past couple of weeks follow:
some come striped... the magenta one self-seeded, and is growing in a large stoneware pot that used to have lavender. As quickly as the clematis are opening their blooms, the roses have been also coming forth:
and the yard is scented in rose...and the peonies and passionflowers begin…
There’s no garden lesson today. My garden is always a mix of weeds and flowers, plantings for critters, flowers for their scent and sometimes simply flowers for their beauty.
Of course, the floor is always open for questions...
